What AI Already Does Very Well
Let’s be honest: AI has become genuinely useful for e-commerce visuals.
It can help to:
- Remove or clean up a background
- Generate moods or staging ideas
- Quickly produce variations of the same image
- Retouch minor flaws
These are good tools. But they are finishing tools, not sources of truth.
AI can imagine a product. It can’t guarantee it’s yours.
The Real Product, Faithful to the Detail
On Amazon, the image must faithfully represent the item being sold.
A generated image can alter, without saying so:
- The exact color of a fabric or finish
- The texture, grain and shine of a material
- Proportions and finishing
- Packaging, logo or label details
The result: a disappointed customer, a return, a negative review. A real photo avoids that risk.
What Amazon Asks for on the Main Image
Rules vary by category, but here are the basics to know:
- Pure white background. RGB 255, 255, 255, with no drop shadow or stray gradient.
- Well-framed product. It must fill most of the image, around 85% or more.
- No text, logo or watermark added to the main image.
- High resolution. Aim for 2000 px on the longest side to enable zoom.
- Actual product only. No accessories that aren’t included in the sale.
These rules evolve: always check your category’s guide before uploading.
What Makes an Image Convincing
Following the rules isn’t enough to sell.
What makes the difference is decided on set:
- Lighting designed for the material: matte, glossy, transparent
- Angles that answer the customer’s questions
- Close-ups on the details that reassure
- Consistency across every image in the listing
A photographer looks at the product in hand. A machine deduces it.
- Speed of variations
- Cutouts and image clean-up
- Mood and setting ideas
- Lower-cost variants
- Total fidelity to the real product
- Accurate materials, colors and finishes
- Creative eye and art direction
- Customer trust, fewer returns
The Right Balance: Real First, AI Second
The best approach doesn’t pit the two against each other.
You photograph the real product, with care. Then you use retouching, including AI-assisted tools, to save time on variations.
The starting point remains a real photo. It’s what your credibility rests on.
